Facing circumstances
That we cannot change
Can cause us to feel
Like we have fallen
Into a deep pit and that we cannot climb out.
Many people feel trapped
in a loveless marriage
with an inattentive and uncaring spouse
Others feel trapped
in an unsatisfying job
that offers no room for advancement.
Many young mothers
feel trapped by the constant
needs of their little ones.
Those who suffer physically
often feel trapped in painful
limited bodies
Countless multitudes
are slaves to the horrible
memories of their pasts
Millions of people
are trapped in habitual sins
and addictions that they
cannot conquer
Some are trapped by depression
discouragement and despondency
In these and other situations
we often feel that
we are drowning in our troubles
gradually sinking
deeper and deeper into despair
David was in a Pit Situation
Out of the miry clay
David was trapped
by the miry clay
around him
The more he struggled
the more entrapped he became
His garments were soiled
by the filth and grime of the clay
He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay. David had been delivered from a horrible pit filled with miry clay. He was in a place of confinement, covered in the mud
David declares that God had established his goings. Prior to the Lord’s help, man’s way always leads to despair and destruction.
I believe that David knew the Lord prior to this particular need, but his physical dilemma presents a great spiritual truth.
David found himself in a place that was anything but desirable. God came to him, lifted him out of the pit, and established his goings.
That has the idea of “making firm or stable; to fix or fashion; to direct and prepare.”
“ A Pit Praise “
Psalm 40:1-3
David reaches a point
Oh honesty and transparency
That escapes many people
In the body of Christ
David in this narrative
He speaks openly
And honestly
About a pass pitfall predicament
That he found himself in
David in this particular text
Does not hide the FACT
That he has had
Hangups
Been through trials
Went thru something in his life
That was so devastating
That he could not
Free himself
David is not like
Most church folks
That come to church
An act like
They never been involved in anything
But David in this
Particular narrative
Confess that there
Was a time in his life
He was in something
And couldn't get out of it
What's interesting about this text
Many scholars have suggested that
And by an exegetical study
How David ended up in this predicament
How is it
That a man
After Gods own heart
Found himself
In a predicament like this
They take the standpoint scholars
That David being a king
David being the man of God
After Gods own heart
He should not have found himself
In a situation like this
When you look at verse 12
People have concluded
That David got himself
In this pit
Because of some immoral practices
That he engaged in
When you look at verse 12
David confesses in verse 12
Psalm 40:12 KJV 1900
12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: Mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; They are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.
So scholars have taken verse 12
And concluded
That based on David's confession
That David on practices
Has placed him in this particular pit
Other scholars look at verse 14
And concluded that
It wasn’t David's on practices
But there was some people
In David's life
That led to David
Being in this pit
Psalm 40:14 KJV 1900
14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; Let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
So those scholars seem to think
That it was not David's practices
That put him in the pit
But it was the people
In David's life
That caused David to be in this pit
So there is two schools of thought
One school suggest — David’s sin got him in the pit
The other school suggest — People/Haters got him in the pit
I want to suggest
Because we don't know
If it was his practices
Or his haters
That put him in the pit
How he got in the pit
Is really not Relevant
Because when people fall
When people find themselves
In an embarrassment situation
When people fall from
The will of God
When people find themselves
Ensnared in the traps of
SIN - SATAN - SHAME
It's not the Saints responsibility
To try to play I Spy
To figure out how they got there
But it is our responsibility
To do all we can
To restore that person
In the spirit of love
[ Can’t fall from Grace ]
Note: If you ever see me in a pit don't try to figure out how I got there but see what you can do to get me out the pit and COVER ME.
But what blesses me
About this text
It’s not how David
Got in the pit
But some kind of way
David manage to go from
A pit predicament
To a standpoint of praise
When we see David in the pit
In the first three verses
And we see David
Out of the pit in verse 4 on
We have to
Come to the conclusion
That it was God
They got David out the pit
No matter
What got you
In your predicament
You need to know
That you serve the kind of God
That can take you from
The pit to Praise
David made up his mind
While he was in the pit
I have to do all
That I can do
When we get ourselves
In this situation
We instantly wait for God
To make the first step
But this text teaches us
That whenever we find ourselves
In a situation
You got to make up your mind
That this is not your final destination
Most scholars suggest that
This situation happened prior
To David being king
Over all Israel
And if this text is apart
Of David pre-possess of the kingdom
It suggests that
When God anointed him
He didn't anoint him to die in the pit
But God anointed him to be a King in the palace
Note: In other words it was just a Pit Stop — Nascar Racing/ Pit Manager-Pit Crew
And so this is apart
Of the process
That God is using
On his way to the palace
“ A Pit Praise “
1st. David Stayed Put under Pressure [ V.1 ]
Patiently — this does not connote the thought of sitting still
Patiently — means to remain under pressure, pressure on top of you, pressure on your back
The pressure is making you think
About throwing in the towel
Walking away — waving the white flag
If you are going to get
Delivered from the predicament
You have to stay put under pressure
Example: One of the most aggravating things is when I have to pick someone up in a particular spot and they are not at that particular spot / Same thing with God
2 Timothy 2:12 (KJV 1900)
12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
IDENTIFICATION WITH CHRIST
You have Pressure EVERYWHERE
[ God knows exactly how you feel ]
Note: The original text says “ In waiting I waited “
Secondly what made David
Wait under pressure
“ A Pit Praise “
1st. David Stayed Put under Pressure [ V.1 ]
He Knew who he was Waiting for [ V.1 ]
What makes waiting difficult
Is when you're not sure
If the person that you're waiting for
Is going to come through
Some people are so unreliable
You don't start getting dress
Until they show up at your house
Note: I know God don’t always come when you call Him but you’re going to want Him when He comes
“ A Pit Praise “
1st. David Stayed Put under Pressure [ V.1 ]
2nd. David Stayed Prayerful in the Pit [ V.1b ]
Cry — Hebrew means to lament
David says
What the pit did not do
The pit didn't prevent him
From praying
Now watch this
This pit restricted
His mobility
But it didn't stop his prayers
What the pit stop me
From doing physically
It didn't stop me
From doing spiritually
Quote: To praise God without praying to Him would be impossible. To pray to God without praising Him would be ungrateful.
“ A Pit Praise “
What did God do for David in the pit
1st. God Leaned & He Listen [ V.1 ]
Inclined — means to bend over, to lean
This suggest the power
Of Davids prayer life
That it pulled God over
To Lean & Listen
Example: A Parent is on the phone talking but while she is talking she overhears her child crying and goes to the rescue.
1st. God Leaned & He Listen [ V.1 ]
2nd. God Lifted & Liberated [ V.2 ]
God lifted him up first
His mind
And then liberated him out
1st. God Leaned & He Listen [ V.1 ]
2nd. God Lifted & Liberated [ V.2 ]
3rd. God Loaned David new Lyrics [ V.3 ]
In other words
David is saying
The praise that's coming out of my mouth
Is not the same praise
That used to come out of my mouth
This praise was born
Out of what
David had been through
This is a Post-Praise [ After ]
David don't have
The same
STALE - STAGNANT - SOUR
Praise
It’s a new praise
Note: New Mercies should bring New Praises / New Songs
Verse 3b - READ
Note: Your praise should be Contagious
1st. David Stayed Put under Pressure [ V.1 ]
2nd. David Stayed Prayerful in the Pit [ V.1b ]
1st. God Leaned & He Listen
2nd. God Lifted & Liberated [ V.2 ]
3rd. God Loaned David new Lyrics [ V.3 ]
